01Market

The regulated online market

The regulated online casino market in Ontario opened on April 4, 2022. A private online operator is legal in Ontario only when two conditions are met. The first is registration with the regulator, the AGCO; the second is an iGaming Ontario operating agreement. The sites that qualify appear in the official directory at igamingontario.ca, run by iGaming Ontario.

Two limits apply to every player. Online casino play is 19+, the same age that applies to entering a casino under the Gaming Control Act, 1992. Play is allowed only while physically in Ontario. OLG.ca stands apart from the private sites. It is the Ontario government's own online casino, run by OLG, and the same 19+ and Ontario-only rules apply there.

02Limits

Opting out of online play

BetGuard, at betguard.ca, is iGaming Ontario's self-exclusion for online play. A single enrolment removes a person 19+ from every regulated gambling site in Ontario, including OLG.ca. The term is chosen from 6 months, 1 year and 5 years, or set as a custom length. Because it leaves land-based casinos out, BetGuard has no effect at the door on Pinewood Park Drive. My PlayBreak covers casinos; enrolment is by phone at 1-800-387-0098 (OLG Support Centre), through casino staff or with a PlaySmart Centre coordinator.

Ontario's help line for problem gambling, mental health and addiction is ConnexOntario, reached at 1-866-531-2600 at any hour on any day. Texts go to 247247 with the word CONNEX, and chat is at connexontario.ca.

03This guide

How this guide is paid

Only one page of the guide carries paid links, and it is the home page. The Ad label marks all three: one is the header button, one comes under the opening screen, and one sits at the lower end of the page. Each of them points to the same single partner, a company that operates a private online casino. The guide is paid a commission on them, and the partner may be replaced.

That partner is not OLG.ca. It has no tie to Cascades Casino North Bay, to Gateway Casinos & Entertainment or to OLG. Whether an online operator is legal in Ontario can be checked, before any use, in the directory iGaming Ontario keeps at igamingontario.ca. Online play is open at 19+, and only to people physically in Ontario.

04Pictures

How the pictures were made

All six pictures in this guide are computer-made images in the look of a photograph; no camera took any of them. The highway, the charging post and the lake shore are made-up scenes a program built from a written description. The MATCH pub table, roadside sign and slot floor at Cascades Casino North Bay were rebuilt by the same program from real photographs. It set its own viewpoint, hour and light. The furniture, sign and carpet match the real ones, yet these are still not photographs, and nobody appears in any picture.

05Questions

Questions, answered from the record

How does a reader find out whether a given online casino holds legal status in Ontario?

Look it up in the iGaming Ontario directory at igamingontario.ca. A private operator is legal in Ontario only when registered with the AGCO and holding an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario.

Is OLG.ca the same as the casino in North Bay?

The two are separate. OLG.ca is the Ontario government's own online casino, run by OLG. Cascades Casino North Bay is a building at 300 Pinewood Park Drive, where Gateway runs the casino day to day and OLG conducts and manages the gaming.

Why are there Ad links on the home page?

Paid placements on the home page number three, all flagged with Ad, and all three answer to one privately owned online casino. Commission on these links goes to the guide. The partner can change, and it is not OLG.ca.
